History of the Promenade du Paillon ⛲️

The Promenade du Paillon, also known as the “coulée verte”, is one of Nice’s most emblematic landmarks. It takes its name from the river of the same name, the Paillon. Its history dates back to the early 18th century, when the territory was under the rule of King Louis XIV. Initially, the Paillon was a watercourse that flowed through the city of Nice and into the Mediterranean Sea. However, recurrent flooding caused by the river’s high water levels made the surrounding land inhospitable. To solve this problem, it was decided to canalize the Paillon. And to create a green promenade along its banks, protecting the city from flooding while providing a pleasant public space for residents.
