History of the Promenade des Anglais 🌴
Its history dates back to the early 19th century, when Nice was a popular destination for British high society.
In those days, many English aristocrats came to spend the winter in Nice to take advantage of the region’s mild, sunny climate. Initially, the promenade was simply a narrow path along the coast, used by walkers to enjoy the view of the Mediterranean Sea. Over time, however, Nice’s popularity with the British led to the transformation of this path into a veritable avenue.
One of the key factors in the Promenade des Anglais’s renown was the arrival of massive tourism in the 1920s. The Côte d’Azur became a popular destination for holidaymakers from all over the world, drawn by its climate, magnificent scenery and lively cultural life. The Promenade des Anglais has become a symbol of luxury and glamour, with its prestigious hotels, casinos and private beaches.
The Promenade des Anglais has also witnessed many historic moments. During the Second World War, it was the scene of battles between Allied forces and the German army during the liberation of Nice.
