- 1 day
The best of Nice in one day!
Are you on a stopover or in transit and want to make the most of your only day in Nice? Then follow the guide!
Our tip: this itinerary is best undertaken on foot. Bring comfortable shoes.
The morning
Your morning
Start your day with a stroll along the legendary Promenade des Anglais. Join the many walkers, cyclists, bathers and joggers who, from early morning, enjoy the sunrise and the breathtaking view over the legendary Baie des Anges. You’ll be captivated by the extraordinary shade of blue of the sea and the elegance of this avenue that runs for 7 kilometres along the Baie des Anges. Admire the luxurious hotels and palaces of Nice, such as Le Negresco and the Palais de la Méditerranée. You’ll also have the irresistible urge to relax on one of the legendary blue chairs and gaze out over the Mediterranean Sea.
Then head for nearby Vieux-Nice. This authentic district is a must for visitors and locals alike. It is the pulse of the city. It’s the heartbeat of the city, beating day and night, and it’s here that you’ll find the essence of the Côte d’Azur capital’s charms: small Nice restaurants, fragrant markets, narrow streets and colourful facades, lively squares and terraces, remarkable religious and private buildings… You’re bound to fall under the spell of the Cours Saleya and its fruit, vegetable and flower market, classed as one of France’s exceptional markets. Take the opportunity to enjoy a socca (chickpea flour cake) cooked over an open fire.
Midday
For lunch
Fresh salads, grilled fish, seasonal vegetables, local wine… Nice’s cuisine is above all simple and sunny, and honours the local produce. Buy a pan bagnat (a typical Nice sandwich) and enjoy it on the beach. Or maybe you’d prefer to sit back and enjoy the very best of Nicoise cuisine in a restaurant with the “Cuisine Nissarde” label?
Nicoise gastronomy is now part of France’s intangible cultural heritage, and has applied to UNESCO to be included in the Inventory of the Intangible Heritage of Humanity. This cuisine favours short circuits and local produce. All the diversity of this local cuisine can be enjoyed in a small bistro, a large table or on the terrace, or even right on the beach, with a view of the port or Old Nice.
In the afternoon
Your afternoon
Continue your discovery of Nice by returning to the seaside. Opposite the Opera House, take a look at a scaled-down version of the Statue of Liberty. Then take a selfie in front of the #ILoveNice on the Quai des États-Unis. The picture is simply postcard perfect. It’s bound to stay with you forever!
Now it’s time to take the stairs up to the Colline du Château. The climb is a little steep, but what a surprise once you get to the top! You’ll discover some of the best views of Nice, the Baie des Anges and the surrounding mountains. Absolutely spectacular!
Head back down to rue Ségurane and visit the antique dealers’ quarter and the Puces de Nice, on the outskirts of the port of Nice. Can you resist the urge to pack a little souvenir from Nice? The splendid Place Garibaldi is just around the corner. Note its facades and its many illusions. Not far from there, the Promenade du Paillon is a 12-hectare ribbon of green that has won over everyone, with its 1,600 trees, 6,000 shrubs and 50,000 perennials, its water features and mirrors. Benches and seats dot the walkway so you can stop and make the most of the moment. Work is currently underway to extend this vast garden to the east of Nice.
Evening
In the evening
As an aperitif, sip a glass of Vin de Bellet (an AOC wine produced on a hillside in Nice) on one of the Port’s terraces before dining in one of Nice’s many restaurants. You’re sure to have spotted a small establishment with a tempting menu?
To finish the evening in style, head to a pub in the “petit Marais Niçois” or on the rooftop of your hotel. As well as excellent food, the rooftop terraces offer magnificent views of the sea, the city and the surrounding hills. At dusk, the sun is sure to put on a dazzling show. At that very moment, time stands still… Absolutely irresistible!
There’s so much to see and do in Nice! One day is bound to be too short… All you have to do is come back!
