Maryse Estier brings to the stage the poetic tragedy by German author Friedrich von Schiller, inspired by the life of Mary Stuart, the ill-fated Queen of Scotland.
His adaptation of the classical repertoire holds up a dizzying mirror between History and the societal issues of our days.
This tragedy recounts the killing of the Queen of Scotland in 1587, condemned for high treason by her cousin, Queen of England, and tried by a tribunal made up of forty men. It's the story of two queens who have power, but no freedom. Another look at Mary Stuart and Elizabeth I, whom the men of their time opposed and transformed from subject to object. On stage, the seven actors highlight the sublime, the funny and the horror.
"After L'Aiglon, I want to continue with the same artistic team our work on rhythmic languages and the adaptation of classic works whose issues resonate today. I want to make Schiller's language heard, brilliant as crystal. Represent, in a refined stage setting, the very Shakespearean atmosphere of this 16th century which combines the sublime, humor and horror; The connection to this play is more intimate than political. It is told here between the scenes of comedy of valets and the verbal jousts of the Lords and the Queens. The influence of Shakespeare is also evident. in these characters who remind us of Clytemnestra or Eteocles.
With Marie Stuart, I want to stage the exploration of the great scars of History and their impact on our own stories. Because my generation has not finished hoping, defending itself, making mistakes and being sacrificed."
