Looking out over the port of Fontvieille on the southern side of the Rock, these zoological gardens were founded by Prince Rainier III in 1954.
They are home to nearly 250 animals representing about 50 species: exotic birds, turtles, caimans, hippopotamuses, reptiles, primates and farm animals.
None of the animals here were purchased! What makes Monaco’s Zoological Gardens unique is that its animals were all donated, or were abandoned or seized by customs.
