As early as 1820, an Anglican place of worship existed on this site. The present church was built from 1859 to 1862 by the British architect Thomas Smith.
In the neo-Gothic style, like the adjoining presbytery, it uses the innovative technique of Pulhamite, developed by O. Pulham who supervised the construction. This type of cement gives the appearance and hardness of stone to the sculpted decoration.
