The Musée Départemental des Arts Asiatiques in Nice is hosting an exhibition on the Chinese artist Sanyu (1895-1966). Come and meet this painter through the hundred or so works exhibited to the public for the first time.

The exhibition highlights the work of Sanyu, one of the most important Chinese painters of the 20th century. It presents 113 ink drawings, etchings and oil paintings, most of them previously unseen, and features a dialogue with works by Picasso, Matisse and Foujita. This is the first exhibition on Sanyu in France for 21 years, offering a unique opportunity to rediscover this major artist.

Sanyu, born in China and trained in calligraphy and ink painting, spent most of his life in Paris. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts de Paris before joining the Académie de la Grande Chaumière.

Sanyu is known for his drawings of female nudes, a theme absent from Oriental tradition, and for his style that combines Chinese heritage with influences from the Parisian avant-garde.

Often compared to Matisse, Sanyu developed a unique art at the crossroads of two cultures.
