Carmen Street – D’après Georges Bizet
Opera
From 21 to 22 June 2025
From Saturday 21 to Sunday 22 June 2025 at 3 pm.
A Carmen revisited as a musical, with plenty of room for dance and hip-hop... It's a unique opportunity for youngsters to get to grips with the world of show business and discover the stage.
Carmen Street is, quite simply, Bizet's score, but sung by musical comedy voices - and with plenty of modern dance.
In this adaptation, Bizet's Spain is replaced by a small suburban town for the first act, a whimsical Belleville cabaret for the second, and the Stade de France for the final act... Carmen is no longer the Andalusian cigar girl of the new Mérimée, but a nurse in a hospital. Don José, her brigadier from Navarre, has become Youcef, a local policeman. As for Escamillo, he's traded in the bullfighter's banderillas for an international pop singer. In fact, he'll be opening the World Cup with a cover of Bizet's hit “Toréador”!
Preserving all the expressive power of Bizet's masterpiece, Jean-Philippe Delavault and his accomplices show us the tremendous topicality of Carmen's drama, making it accessible to everyone, and especially to today's youngsters, who can make it their own by singing all its hits while dancing hip-hop.
