Villa Kérylos, a must see in Beaulieu-sur-Mer
A palace inspired by ancient Greece facing the sea? Villa Kerylos is an invitation to travel to the heart of Greek antiquity.
The villa was built between 1902 and 1908, close to the ancient Greek port of Anao.
It was commissioned by Théodore Reinach, an enthusiast of ancient Greece who wanted to draw inspiration from a Greek house in Delos dating from the 2nd century BC. It was the architect Emmanuel Pontremoli who brought the project to life, accompanied by the best artists and craftsmen of the time.
💡 Did you know ?
In Greek mythology, Kerylos refers to Alcyon, the bird born of the transformation of Alcyone, wife of Ceyx. This sea swallow was reputed to herald a good omen.
Inside, the layout of the rooms and the mosaic carpets transport you into an ancient Mediterranean atmosphere, and every piece of furniture, textile and window is designed to recreate the refinement and elegance of ancient Greek palaces.
Surrounding the building, the gardens are a haven of peace and tranquillity, with uninterrupted views of the Mediterranean as far as the eye can see.
The garden’s plant species create a harmonious whole bathed in Côte d’Azur sunshine: you’ll find vineyards and olive groves, as well as pomegranate, carob, acanthus and myrtle trees, oleanders and irises, pines and cypresses, palms and papyrus.
