Arnaud Maguet – La suprême team des champions et l’étrange matière

Music has always been at the heart of Arnaud Maguet's work. It is not a simple theme or an influence, but a real plastic and conceptual material. From garage rock to electronic experiments, via DIY punk and psychedelic music, he explores sound in its most radical form: its capacity to create myth, energy and disorder. His installations play with the codes of the fanzine, the record cover, the wild logo, the sound collage and the visual montage, evoking as much Dadaist tinkering as protest posters.

In the line of contemporary artists who appropriate everyday objects to divert their meaning – from Tom Sachs to Mike Kelley, via Jean-Luc Moulène or Jessica Stockholder –, Arnaud Maguet plays with the collision of forms and references. The Supreme Team of Champions & Strange Matter stages a universe where disparate elements, artifacts from popular culture, industrial materials and improbable objects, never intended to be associated, coexist.

Alongside his objects and assemblages, this exhibition also highlights a new series of paintings, where the gesture becomes a sign, where graphics are freed from all constraints. Like disjointed slogans or abstract scores, his forms detach themselves from the frame to become an instinctive writing, both brutal and loose.

In the manner of so-called "tribal" or vernacular practices, where ritual objects are born from the diversion of found materials, Maguet constructs assemblages that question our relationship to memory, image and sound. This work of juxtaposition gives rise to hybrid compositions, where each element keeps the trace of its history while integrating itself into a new narrative.

With this exhibition, Arnaud Maguet extends his unique approach, where tinkering becomes a plastic and conceptual act, a form of resistance to established frameworks.
